What is Keratosis Pilaris?
Keratosis pilaris is a common mild condition in which the backs of the upper arms look rather like dried out, plucked chicken flesh. Keratosis pilaris is hereditary.
The characteristic rash is caused by firm little plugs forming in the hair follicles. The plugs themselves are made of bits of keratin, the main protein found in the outermost protective layer of skin (thus the name keratosis). These plugged follicles give the skin a raised, stippled appearance -- usually called goosebumps. The bumps are usually skin color or slightly pinker, and do not itch. The rash is often not noticeable to others, except on close inspection.
Classically, the condition appears in early childhood, often around the age of two or three. Since the rash is associated with and worsened by dryness of the skin, most people experience a clear-cut seasonal variation -- generally worse in the winter. Although the rash changes in intensity from time to time, the baseline usually stays the same until middle adolescence, when it begins to improve. Adults who still have keratosis pilaris often experience further improvement during the middle decades. The average age when spontaneous improvement is first noted is sixteen.
Although keratosis pilaris is hereditary, the rash is more common in those with eczema, dry skin, or vitamin A deficiency (or a number of more esoteric skin conditions). The most common spot on the body for keratosis pilaris is the backs of the upper arms (92% of affected people have it there). Next most common is the thighs (59%). It can also occur on the face, buttocks, and eyebrows.
Treatment for keratosis pilaris is not necessary, and unfortunately, it often has disappointing results. With persistence, most people can get improve this aesthetic state by moisturizing and replenishing the skin frequently. You should start your treatment with a good, concentrated, moisturizing lotion. You can try an ointment such as Acid mantle, Vaseline or Complex 15 after bathing, and re-apply the ointment again several times daily. Still, there is no assurance that this unpleasant disorder will disappear or lessen with these creams.
If this does not help, alter your treatment to a medicated cream containing urea (Curel, Carmol-20) or alpha-hydroxy acids (Aqua Glycolic, Lacticare). To get these balms you will need a medical prescription, and he/she will counsel you on proper care. In most cases they’ll tell you to apply these lotions twice a day. In this specific case, more is not better, it may be too harsh to use with higher frequency. More aggressive home microdermabrasion can be done if your skin can tolerate it. Prescription medicines may aid and soften, including some antibiotics like Erythromycin and Bactrim. If the puffiness or redness of the bumps is getting worse, you should think about the medical use of topical retinoids. The derivatives of vitamin A can be very insensitive for the skin, so be conscious of all the symptoms you develop, to avoid scarring or some other side effect.
