Keratosis pilaris is a skin condition in which the hair follicles become blocked with excess keratin destined to be used in hair formation. The follicles that become clogged redden and inflame causing bumps to develop. The papules of keratosis pilaris usually occur on the upper arms and thighs, but also appear on the face, back, and buttocks.

Keratosis pilaris (KP) is a genetic-hereditary disorder. One can inherit it from one or both parents, but it can also be a first generation development. KP stems from over-reproduction of keratinocytes, the cells that manufacture the protein keratin, an important skin component as a connective and protective tissue. Some researchers describe KP as one of a whole spectrum of disorders, rather than as an independent condition. In many cases, it is associated with other dermal conditions like eczema, or contact allergies.

KP is more prevalent among children and adolescents (up to 80%) and less common in adults (40%). It seems to improve after puberty, but in some cases it lingers almost all through life. Individuals with dry skin and eczema (skin disorder) tend to have more severe cases of keratosis pilaris. The condition improves during warm summer months and worsens during the winter; this is supposed to be caused by change in the humidity levels. Some doctors claim that the use of thicker clothing creates a bigger contact area with the skin, so the inflammation is due to friction.

A dermatologist diagnoses KP based on the appearance of the skin. He will look for the signs of keratosis pilaris, which are papules that typically appear on the upper arms and thighs, and sometimes on the back, face, and buttocks. Papules re-form after they have been removed.

Thus far, physicians have not developed curative treatments for KP. Gently rubbing off the top layer of skin with a loofah sponge flattens the papules. Fruit acid creams are sometimes effective in unplugging the follicles.

The condition cannot be prevented because its underlying cause is genetic. However, very gentle rubbing with a loofah sponge and periodically applying fruit acid creams to keep the follicle openings clear can improve appearance.

Other measures to avoid excessive dryness include taking lukewarm, brief showers and using a humidifier, particularly during the winter months when low humidity dries out the skin.
