Severe Keratosis Pilaris on Torso
Keratosis pilaris is a very common skin condition. This disorder can vary in extent from sparse lesions over the backs of the arms and fronts of the legs, to involvement of most of the surface of the body. The lesions often resemble gooseflesh, and many people associate it with “chicken skin”. Bumps are not inflammatory though are scaly, raised and separate which do not coalesce.
The lesions are accentuated by and associated with dry skin, and so are more prominent in the winter. During the summer and with some safe tanning, a person may see its keratosis reduced to almost non existence. They are also more frequent in patients with allergic skin conditions, and there is some relation between eczema and keratosis pilaris.
Keratosis pilaris may appear anywhere on the body, but it is usually seen on the upper arms, buttocks and thighs. When it develops on the torso, it may itch and become a problem. The best way to reduce this discomfort is to sunbathe (or use a sun bed), and keep the skin moisturized with a water based lotion. Mild or localized eruptions respond to moisturizing with a soft emollient. More pronounced or widespread lesions need regular applications of a 10 to 20% urea cream, or something containing lactic acid or topical retinoic acid. If those chemical do not work (in most cases they don’t), there is a natural substance that can actually reduce this condition and leave your skin smooth and perfect.
Any treatment can improve the condition but will not cure it. Prescription medicines may help including some antibiotics (Erythromycin, Bactrim).
