Rosacea and Keratosis Pilaris

Rosacea: It is a long-term disease that attacks the skin and in some cases the eyes. Its main characteristics are redness, pimples, and, in advanced stages, thickened skin. Rosacea usually affects the face; the other parts of the body are rarely affected.

Approximately 14 million people in the United States have rosacea. It is more often in adults, whose ages fluctuate between 30 and 60, and it’s more common in women than in men. Still, in men is almost always much more severe.

This condition attacks people with fair skin; it is usually related with individuals from Nordic ethnics, and pale Caucasians. On the other hand, it is only related with the amount of melanin within the dermal tissue, and not with hair and eye coloring. This means that very pale people can be affected by it, without them being blonds or redheads.
Rosacea has many symptoms associated with it, including the following:

• Recurrent redness (flushing) of the face. Most redness is at the center of the face (forehead, nose, cheeks, and chin). There may also be a burning feeling and slight swelling.
• 
  Tiny red lines beneath the outer layer of skin. These lines show up when blood vessels under the skin get larger. This area of the skin may be somewhat swollen, warm, and red.
• 
  Constant redness along with bumps on the skin. Sometimes the bumps have pus inside (pimples), but not always. Solid bumps on the skin may later become painful.
• Inflamed eyes/eyelids.
• 
  A swollen nose. In some people (mostly men), the nose becomes red, larger, and bumpy. This symptom has been wrongly associated with alcoholism, and even though alcohol can accentuate rosacea, the condition can be there where the person drinks or not.
• 
  Thicker skin. The skin on the forehead, chin, cheeks, or other areas can become thicker because of rosacea, making it look older and tired.

Doctors don't know the precise cause of rosacea, but they link blood vessels expand too easily, causing flushing and a lack of melanin. People who blush a lot may be more prone to develop rosacea. It is also thought that people inherit the probability of getting the disease, but nothing has been proven yet.

Though not well-researched, many dermatologists will recommend you to stay away from the following factors because they are thought to worsen rosacea.

People with rosacea and pimples may think the pimples are caused by bacteria. But no one has found a clear link between rosacea and bacteria.

Keratosis pilaris: (KP) is a very common genetic follicular condition that is manifested by the appearance of rough bumps on the skin and hence colloquially referred to as "chicken skin".

Primarily, it appears on the back and outer sides of the upper arms, but can also occur on thighs and buttocks or any body part except glabrous skin (like the palms or soles of feet).

There is no cure for Keratosis pilaris; treatments are largely symptomatic and must be repeated.
