Medical Treatment of Keratosis Pilaris is Unnecessary

Keratosis pilaris as a skin condition is quite common. The manifestation is a series of bumps or “sandpaper” texture on the outer side of the upper arms. There is nothing to fear about this condition, it does not involve any health risk, except for the fact that it might damage your self esteem. There are no other symptoms that accompany keratosis pilaris except bumps, dryness and itchiness, so there is not much to worry about. There are numerous rough follicular spots, which may be skin colored, red or brown, and to lessen them you can use exfoliating lotions or home microdermabrasion products.

The most common places where it occurs are thighs, upper arms and cheeks. Still it can appear anywhere on the skin (except palm of hands and soles of feet), but mainly on the forearms and upper back. This skin condition is thought to be a disorder of keratinisation in which the sticky cells that line the hair follicle form a horny plug instead of exfoliating. This widens the pores making them appear more obvious than elsewhere. Often a curled hair can be identified under the skin. 

If you are actually looking for an antibiotic that can help from within, some dermatologist will recommended Erythromycin and Bactrim. If you want a prescription medicine that can be used topically, there are various vitamin A derivatives like Tazorac that can help. Still, beware of this chemicals and antibiotics because they have side effects. Erythromycin has been associated with gastritis, Bactrim can produce nausea and reflux, and Tazorac can irritate the skin to the point of scarring.

If you are trying to lessen your symptoms, you should know that Keratosis pilaris tends to be more severe during the winter months or other times of low humidity when skin dries out. During the summer, the bumps can even disappear especially because of the sun. Sunbathe is recommended, but with adequate care, use sun-block and stay away from direct sunlight from 11am to 4pm.
