Keratosis Pilaris Treatment - Natural Relief
Keratosis pilaris also known as follicular keratosis, is a very common genetic benign follicular condition or disorder of keratinization of hair follicles of the skin. It is manifested by the appearance of rough bumps on the skin, hence referred to as chicken skin or goose bumps; it is normally cosmetically displeasing but medically harmless.
It mostly appears on the back and outer sides of the upper arms and can also develop on the thighs and top of legs, flanks, buttocks, or any body part except hairless skin such as the palms or soles of feet. Less commonly, lesions appear on the face, which may be mistaken for acne.
It is also known as "chicken skin" and is often described in association with other dry skin conditions such as ichthyosis vulgaris, xerosis, and occasionally, with atopic dermatitis, as well as conditions of asthma and allergies. The characteristic "reddish" aspect of this type of facial keratosis pilaris gives it the clinical name of Keratosis Pilaris Rubra Faceii.
Keratosis pilaris is more common among children and adolescents and less common in adults. It seems to improve after puberty, however in some cases it can remain approximately all through life. Individuals with dry skin and eczema are more likely to have more severe cases of keratosis pilaris. Generally, the condition improves during warm summer months and worsens during the winter; this is supposed to be caused by change in the humidity levels.
Dermatologists have not developed and absolute curative treatment for KP. The condition cannot be prevented because its underlying cause is genetic; however it can be improved in appearance.

Treatment options for keratosis pilaris focus on exfoliating or softening the skin to reduce keratin clogged pores. Treatment originally begins with adherence to non-pharmacologic method and compliance with daily living functions that will not deteriorate the condition. An important first treatment step is to use a gentle cleansing agent with light abrasive properties, often termed scrub, but one that keeps moisture (for sensitive skin). The goal is to clean and open the pores of the skin without over drying. Other measures to avoid excessive dryness include taking lukewarm, brief showers and using a humidifier, particularly during the winter months when low humidity dries out the skin.
