BIOSKINTREATMENT™ lotion gently dissolves the excess keratin of the skin. The cream works through hydrolysis, a process in which a molecule is split into two parts by reacting with a molecule of water. One of the parts gets an OH- from the water molecule and the other part gets an H+ from the water. This separates the keratin into two different amino acids, and thus it is easily removed.
This is distinct from a hydration reaction, very much like an enzymatic dissolution helps the skin become more even and smooth. In organic chemistry, enzyme dissolution can be considered as the reverse or opposite of water losing. So, by this process the skin is turned into a silky, smooth tissue.
Keratin
Keratin is a fibrous structural protein of hair, nails and skin. A quarter of the amino acids in keratin is cystine. These amino acids can form strong bridging bonds with other cystine molecules, this account for keratin's great solidity. Keratin does not soften in cold or hot water and does not easily undertake proteolysis. The sulphurous smell of burning keratin is distinctive; most of us will associate with scorched hair or nails.
There are various types of keratins, even inside a single animal cell. Some infectious fungi, such as those which cause athlete's foot and ringworm, feed on keratin, so they dissolve it.
Cells in the epidermis contain a structural matrix of keratin which makes this epidermis layer of the skin almost waterproof, and combined with collagen and elastin; give the dermal tissue its strength. Rubbing and pressure cause keratin to flourish with the development of protective calluses — practical for athletes and on the fingertips of musicians who play stringed instruments. Keratinized skin cells are continuously shed and replaced.
In humans there are soft epithelial keratins, the cytokeratins, and harder hair keratins. As certain skin cells separate and become cornified, pre-keratin polypeptides are included into intermediate filaments. Eventually the nucleus and cytoplasmic organelles withdraw, metabolism ceases and cells experience a programmed death as they become completely keratinized.
Keratins are the main component of structures that grow from the skin: the α-keratins in the hair, nails, etc. These hard, integument structures are formed by intercellular reinforcement of fibres formed from the dead, cornified cells created by specialized beds deep within the subcutaneous layer. Hair grows incessantly and regenerates. The component proteins may be phylogenetically similar but differ somewhat in chemical structure and supermolecular arrangement.
Extensive disulfide bonding contributes to the insolubility of keratins, except in dissociating or reducing agents such as urea.
